The Crisis in Japan: The Adventist Community Unites to Provide Aid

Loma Linda/Redlands Mission Church is taking part in the effort to provide relief for those in need.

Members of the Adventist Development Relief Agency, or ADRA, have hit the ground running in Japan. The group, which represents churches across the country, including several in Loma Linda, has provided food to the victims of a tsunami that hit following an 8.9 magnitude earthquake on March 11.

ADRA has collected hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations for the victims, said John Torres, Assistant Director of Public Relations with ADRA International.

"It's been wonderful to see the generous support ADRA has received from people," Torres said. "Our efforts are going  slowly. I think that's because unlike most of the places where ADRA works, Japan is a developed nation."

The government has taken the lead on a lot of response projects, Torres said. At the government request, ADRA handed out food to those in Sendai, he said.

"And we remain at the ready to help," he said.
