Gusts 60 MPH and Stronger Prompt Closure of Cal State San Bernardino Campus

Winds gusting greater than 60 miles per hour prompted the closure of Cal State San Bernardino's campus Monday afternoon, a university spokesman tells Patch.

Weather instruments on campus measured a gust of 64 mph at one point, Joe Gutierrez of California State University, San Bernardino, said in a phone interview.

No damage or injuries had been reported on campus, Gutierrez said. There were no students at the school Monday because the Fall Quarter ended Friday, but there were still faculty and staff on campus, which lies southeast of the Cajon Pass and below Waterman Canyon in a known wind corridor.

"Because of high wind conditions and for the safety of the campus community, Cal State San Bernardino will close at 3 p.m. today, Monday, Dec. 9," Gutierrez said in a statement. "The CSUSB nursing pinning ceremony scheduled for 6 p.m. today at the Santos Manuel Student Union will take place as planned."

Wind warnings and advisories were in effect for the region Monday into Tuesday morning.

Students are on winter break as the fall quarter ended Friday, Dec. 6. Campus business operations are scheduled to resume on Tuesday, Dec. 10.

Operations remain open at CSUSB’s Palm Desert Campus. Students living in the campus residence halls who have not left for winter recess may remain in the housing units.
