I applaud the Patch for adding a section dedicated to small business. Especially in this disaster of…Read More an economy and in a state that just hailed the unemployment rate dropping to 9.8%. But to kick it off with an interview of a realtor? Has everyone forgotten it was the realtors who gamed the system to grab millions in profits by selling people homes they couldn't afford in the first place? OK, give this woman her due for her success. But she and her business do not face any of the trials and tribulations over the counter small businesses daily endure. Except for perhaps a receptionist, all her people are independent or subcontractors on commission so she never has to worry about payroll, workman's comp, employee insurance or soon Obamacare. Realtors also get a pass on the Redlands sign code. Property for sale signs can go up anywhere with no regard to size, flashing lights, balloons or dancing gorillas. But just ask any Redlands small business owner who paints a window or puts out a 3 foot x 4 foot sandwich sign just how fast code enforcement swoops down to issue citations and fines. And don't forget about annual EPA, OSHA, health and fire inspections. Realtors are regulated so her business doesn't have to worry about competitors and the internet undercutting prices or stealing customers. Ms. Corcoran also has no worries about buying and paying off inventory, or the costs involved with storage and spoilage. And if any small business owner I know ever had an extra $500 at the end of the month, the money would go into the bank to cover a weaker period right around the corner. And if Barbara Corcoran did in fact call and record such a party a sales meeting, she better not have deducted the cost as a business expense as that would be tax fraud. Businesses and jobs are moving out of the area not in. So how about for the next story the Patch interviews city officials to ask why it's so hard to start a business these days? Or why not until the economy actually does improve they relax ordinances like the sign code?
