Excessive Heat Warning Issued: City Recommends Cool Centers

With temps of 100 and hotter expected this weekend, the National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for Redlands, Loma Linda and the rest of the Inland Empire.

The warning was issued shortly after noon Wednesday, for a period beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday June 29 through 8 p.m. Sunday June 30.

"A strong upper level ridge of high pressure over California and Nevada will bring very hot weather to inland areas Friday through Sunday," the Weather Service advised. "High temperatures will be 115 to 120 in the lower deserts . . . around 110 in the upper deserts . . . 100 to 110 in the Inland Empire and 100 to 105 on the lowest mountain slopes. Near record temperatures will be likely in these areas. The heat will be dangerous to those who are outdoors."

City of Redlands officials on Wednesday afternoon recommended the Joslyn Senior Center, Community Senior Center and the Community Center for people seeking refuge from the heat.

Joslyn Senior Center at 21 Grant St. and the Community Senior Center at 111 W. Lugonia are open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, according to Redlands spokesman Carl Baker.

The Community Center at 111 W. Lugonia is open 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The Community Center and Senior Center will also be open Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The senior centers and community center are closed Sundays, Baker said.
